Group Work

Therapeutic groups provide a safe and supportive space for children to develop essential social and emotional skills.

Humans survive and thrive through groups—whether in families, classrooms, or workplaces. The ability to connect within a group is not just beneficial but vital. Groups can be a powerful source of healing and growth, but for those who struggle to engage, they can become a source of isolation and pain. Mastering these dynamics is essential for navigating life’s challenges and building a strong foundation for personal and social well-being.

Led by two psychotherapists Regina Igoe and Aideen Lynch these groups offer a rich dynamic that provides children with a unique opportunity to:

  • Build essential social and emotional skills
  • Navigate friendships
  • Manage their emotions
  • Balance their needs with those of others

Being part of a group is necessary for children to build critical life skills that lay the groundwork for healthy adult relationships.

In today’s world, where organic peer interactions through outdoor street play have become rare, and the isolation caused by COVID-19 has further limited social opportunities, many children struggle to develop the advanced play skills needed to build strong peer relationships or naturally work through life’s challenges. Group therapy not only bridges this gap but also ensures that children receive support sooner, bypassing long waiting lists for individual therapy.

More Details

Combining Virgina Axline’s model of play therapy & Dr. Sue Jennings' ERP model, Aideen and I will design an 8-10 week program tailored to each group’s needs, focusing on strengths rather than deficits. These child-led sessions will resemble free play as much as possible, allowing children to explore their day-to-day preoccupations in a safe and supportive environment offering many children a transformative experience they may not otherwise have access to.

We will work closely with parents, meeting with them both before and after the group sessions. These meetings will provide valuable psychoeducation and practical guidance, ensuring that the child’s entire support network—at home and school—works together to foster their growth and well-being.
